Watching the Leafs game on TSN......the hockey panel in intermission were talking about Drouin......Gino Reda say in the March rankings Drouin will be #2 and MacKinnon dropped to #3.........not bad for a guy who wasn't good enough to start the season in the Q last year.

He passed mackinnon at the wjc IMO . He was still ranked 3rd after that......they were comparing his points, and stuff last night, showing a nice end to end rush, and said playing without MacKinnon has really showed how talented he really was.........the new rankings come out in March and they had a preview of that with him at number 2.

Yup Drouin has been the much more dynamic player this year. MacKinnon was having a good season as well. Hopefully he comes back 100% and raises his play even moreso.
I was thinking before that more Moose fans would defend MacKinnon because he's from Cole Harbour. But nope, we know Drouin is having the better season and as of right now, he deserves to be the higher-ranked prospect. But whoever gets either of them is getting a franchise player. Same with Jones. So you can flip-flop them all day, it doesn't really matter.

I haven't seen MacKinnon turning out to be the follow up dynamo, of the WonderBoy we saw last year......he doesn't have anywhere near a complete game......I see a lot of end to end rushes, not seeing his linemates, and low percentage shots.......I'm not sure if he is trying to keep up with Drouin or not, but as an overall hockey player, Drouin is by far the better player. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Mac drop a few more spots before the NHL draft actually happens.

I just hope somebody pulls him from under the bus when he gets back on the ice.

I doubt mackinnon is picked in the top 5 Agreed.....While I do agree that I would take Drouin over Mac, Mac isn't going to fall below 3 guaranteed. He's been on the radar far too long. Jones, Drouin and Mac will go 1-2-3 (depending on the needs of the team drafting as to what order they are selected but those will be the top 3 IMO....)

I just hope somebody pulls him from under the bus when he gets back on the ice. lol yup. It's all about the flavor of the month in hockey. Easy to forget just how dominant MacKinnon was, especially with the Moose winning the games he has missed. I understand that people will get all giddy at Drouin passing him in the rankings. But he's going to be a great NHLer regardless of where he gets picked, and that's all I really care about. Like Porky said, we saw MacKinnon try to rush end to end a little too much. I think that is a maturity thing and he'll work himself out of it. We've seen that he's a tremendous passer with very good vision when he chooses to use it. We're talking on the other board about putting MacKinnon on the 3rd line when he returns. Of course then the chatter will start that a potential top 3 pick is playing 3rd line. But it's all about creating 3 great lines and making it a nightmare to defend against: Drouin - MacAulay - Frk Ciampini - Boudreau - Ashley Ryan - MacKinnon - Fournier Beauchemin - Andrews - Falkenham Which one of those top 3 lines do you put your best defenders and shutdown forwards out against? It'd be interesting to see what Ducharme ends up doing when MacKinnon and Falkenham return.

The Moose are in a similar situation that SJ experienced the past couple of years. With all that firepower how do you try and match up your best or shutdown line against the team when almost EVERYBODY can be expected to score?
Of course then the team pulls a bonehead 1st period on National TV and are behind 2-0 after giving up only 2 shots in the period. (Game 1 First round last year, CB @ SJ)

Of course then the team pulls a bonehead 1st period on National TV and are behind 2-0 after giving up only 2 shots in the period. (Game 1 First round last year, CB @ SJ) That can probably be attributed to a 20 minute long lack of focus by the whole team. The Moose can learn from that period. We beat Sherbrooke 4-3 on pink in the rink night, and it was a very even game. We lost to SJ at home in OT as well. So 15-16th ranked teams have hung around against us. We have to keep our focus and not take anyone lightly. I see a lot of threads out there about "Is MacKinnon better than....". Definitely a lot of chatter. As fans, we can't really defend him. All we can do is hope he returns to his dominating self after he comes back.

Correction: Tied 2-2 after the 1st. Lit 'em up after that though.

I won't make a habit of posting the same thing on both boards, but this pertains to this exact discussion.
Sean Lafontaine (A Scout in the OHL) puts the MacKinnon vs Jones vs Drouin chat in perspective with this string of tweets:
Sean Lafortune @seanlafortune
The Jones/MacKinnon/Drouin talk reminds me ALOT of the Hedman/Tavares/Duchene talk in 2009. We often get tired of the same guy on top.
Sean Lafortune @seanlafortune
...Point for me is that we often ignore the guy on top for the 'new guy'. Sometimes we overthink and hyper analyse things.
Sean Lafortune @seanlafortune
As a spectator, I remember people nit picking aspects of Tavares game while applauding the 'new' guys. We could be seeing a repeat here.
Sean Lafortune @seanlafortune
I think we have a tendancy to overscout and analyse the top player, finding reasons to knock him down. You need to always scout in a vacuum.
Sean Lafortune @seanlafortune
Is that the case with MacKinnon, hard to say. I think we need to be cognizant of it and remember the 36 month curve, not the 2 month curve.

See reesor's post above....It makes a lot of sense to me in that I understand what the scout is saying.... People will have a tendency to want to knock the guy off at the top and I think that could be happening here...It's really hard to say who will go where and when but I really believe Mac stays in the top 3 unless he has a "disastrous" return but I doubt that happens either.
